Alex Kalil’s top matches of 2020

2020 was a strange year for pro wrestling. In March, the world shut down and almost every wrestling company put everything on pause. WWE and AEW continued their weekly television shows anyways they could, with other companies following suit later on in the year. Whether it was limited crowds, no crowds, crowds that could only clap and not cheer or a crowd of extras, promotions found a way to give us access to the greatest sport in the world. Here are the best of the best from this strange year in our lives. For more of my thoughts and opinions on wrestling, film, television and more, follow me on Twitter @AlexKalil

 Top Matches of 2020

1. Champion vs. Champion Match: IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada vs. IWGP Intercontinental Champion Tetsuya Naito at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 2 *****: This was the biggest match in NJPW history. The IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental championships on the line. But more than that, Okada vs. Naito at Tokyo Dome once again! Naito is desperate to finally conquer his rival Okada in this building after failing twice before and never have the stakes been higher. The match starts out seemingly even but Okada is quick to target the knee of Naito that was hurt the previous night in his match. Naito refuses to stop and keeps fighting back all match even when he can barely stand, his will is that strong. Okada doesn’t let up. He lays in lariats and attacks the knee. The crowd is rabid for Naito to win, nearly begging for Naito to get up and keep fighting and win. Naito digs deep and keeps moving forward, throwing all he has at Okada. At one point, Naito uses the Stardust Press, the very move that cost him his battle with Okada 2 years ago. On this night, Naito hits it! But it’s only enough for a two count! Brilliant story-telling! Okada looks for a Rainmaker to finish it but Naito counters! DESTINO! And the 3 count! Naito has not only become the first man to hold the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental championship at the same time but did so beating Okada in the main event at the Tokyo Dome! The 6 year journey that started at Wrestle Kingdom 8 is completed! What a match, what a story, what a masterpiece of pro wrestling!

2. IWGP Heavyweight Championship Match: Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Kota Ibushi at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 1 *****: This was another Tokyo Dome classic. Okada the wrestler battled Ibushi the striker and high flyer. Both men looked to keep the match in their wheelhouse and work their style match. It was simple but effective pro wrestling at its best. Eventually this match turned into a violent and brutal match of strikes and exchanges as both knew what was on the line. Okada broke out Red Ink to try and win and keep Ibushi off his game while Ibushi used Nakamura’s Boma Ye and even a Phoenix Splash to try and complete his goal of becoming “God” in NJPW. Ibushi time and time again looked to have Okada beat but Okada won’t stay down and kept fighting back. Okada counters Ibushi’s offense one time too many and catches him with the Rainmaker to end it. This match was beautiful pro wrestling. Bell to bell action and a match that could’ve gone either way. I was hooked all match.

3. AEW World Tag Team Championship Match: Adam Page and Kenny Omega (c) vs. The Young Bucks at AEW Revolution *****: This was a fantastic match! Both teams come in needing to win. The Bucks wanting to prove they are the best tag team and Page and Omega wanting to prove they are not a fluke tag team. The match starts simple enough with great back and forth wrestling but quickly gets heated as Page and Matt Jackson want to fight each other and make this personal. The crowd are all in for it and make the Bucks the heels of the match as their drive to be champions and anger get the best of them and at times even look to hurt their friends to win. The match is excellent with tons of back and forth action as both teams look incredible.  The Bucks finally stop playing around and hit an Indy-taker onto Page on the ramp, leaving Omega alone against the Bucks. Omega battles with all he has despite the beating he takes, even kicking out at 1 to a Golden Trigger! Page at long last makes his return to save Omega and runs wild on both Bucks! Page even breaks out a One-Winged Angel to try and finish off Matt but Nick saves his brother. Page hits a Buckshot Lariat on Nick and follows up with one on Matt to finish it! This was one of the greatest tag team matches of all time! It told an incredible story of Page proving himself as a top guy and able to beat both Bucks by himself while Bucks showed how far they would go to win the belts.

4. NXT United Kingdom Championship Match: WALTER (c) vs. Ilja Dragunov at NXT UK 10/29 *****: This was pure wrestling in its purest form. WALTER the monstrous, dominant champion versus the smaller but never say die babyface, Ilja Dragunov. Both men waste no time and go right after the other with brutal and stiff strikes. Some of the most violent chops ever seen in wrestling by both men and some great wrestling as both really lean into their holds and submissions. WALTER starts to target the neck of Ilja hoping to take away his ability to hit his Torpedo Moscow headbutt and also weaken the neck for WALTER to lock in his sleeper hold. This match is a symphony of brutality as both men hold nothing back on the other and fight all match to keep control of the pace. Ilja fires up time and time again and refuses to let WALTER push him around but the size and power of WALTER is used in full force as he chops, stomps and slaps Ilja around all match.  WALTER at long last gets the sleeper hold in deep and though Ilja fights to escape, he can’t and passes out from the hold to end the match. If a crowd had been here for this match, this match would be remembered as one of the greatest matches of all time. But as it is, it is still a 5 star classic that needs to be seen by any fan of pro wrestling.

5. Best of the Super Junior 2020 Final Match: El Desperado vs. Hiromu Takahashi at NJPW Best Of The Super Junior XXVII/World Tag League 2020 Day 17 *****: The match that made El Desperado a star. These two bitter rivals waste no time and go right after each other with strikes with Hiromu getting the better of his masked opponent. Desperado switches tactics and goes after the knee of Hiromu that has been a target the whole Super Juniors tournament (which cleverly started with El Desperado hurting it on the first night). Desperado is vicious in his attacks on Hiromu’s knee; wanting to slow down the faster wrestler and prevent him from using his more effective offensive moves. Everytime Hiromu starts to rally and fight back against El Desperado, his opponent is quick to go right back to the knee to kill any hopes of him fighting back, even by bending the rules as much as he can. Hiromu finally has enough and starts to battle through the pain and look to finish Desperado quickly to save his knee from further damage, even hitting a breath-taking Candian Destroyer out of Desperado’s Numero Dos submission! Desperado is done playing clean. He takes out the referee and low blows Hiromu to stop his fired up comeback. But Hiromu won’t go down easy and hits a stiff right hand right into Desperado’s face! Hiromu is pissed and rips Desperado’s mask to pieces! Desperado says “Fine!” and recovers his mask! The crowd is shocked as the rivals start from the beginning and just start punching and hitting each other! It’s insanity! Hiromu finally hits Time Bomb but only gets a 2 count! Time Bomb 2 ends it and Hiromu is your Best of Super Juniors winner! An epic and incredible battle that told the story of Hiromu fighting through the battle to beat Desperado who was willing to give everything he had to win. It was pro wrestling done right!

6. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Match: Will Ospreay (c) vs. Hiromu  Takahashi at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 1 *****: A battle between two of the most beloved junior heavyweights in NJPW at the biggest stage. Ospreay and Hiromu are very even early on in the match in terms of ability and speed so Ospreay decides to play dirty and target the freshly healed neck of Hiromu . Hiromu is forced to withstand brutal punishment all in the hopes of reclaiming the prize he never lost months ago and even puts his body in further danger with his insane, death-defying offense. These two men pulled off some amazing sequences of lightning fast offense and hard hitting strikes but either seemed to put the other away. Both throw their best maneuvers at the other but still they battle back until at last, Hiromu uses his new finisher, Time Bomb 2 to complete his amazing comeback from injury. An excellent match that showed how far both were willing to go and put their bodies through to be the best.

7. G1 Climax 2020 Block A Match: Shingo Takagi vs. Kazuchika Okada at NJPW G1 Climax 30  Day 13 ****3/4: A match between one of my favorite NJPW talents and my former favorite from Dragon Gate, this was a phenomenal match. Shingo is all power all match and just beats down Okada with his strikes and power moves. Okada keeps to his game play for the G1: work the neck and lock in the Money Clip submission hold. Okada keeps trying to wrestle his style match and not get sucked into a slug-fest with the beast that is Shingo.  Tons of great action all match between these two with Shingo pulling out all the stops to finish Okada even using a Rainmaker on The Rainmaker himself! Pumping Bomber, Made in Japan. Nothing seems to keep Okada down. Shingo goes for his ace in the hole: The Last of the Dragon. But Okada counters out of it and locks in the Money Clip! Shingo tries to fight out and get to the ropes but Okada has it locked in deep and eventually Shingo passes out from the hold! Awesome match that made Okada look like the top star he still is but made Shingo look just as good in defeat. My only wish was Okada breaking out his own Rainmaker on Shingo to finish him off due to Shingo doing his own move to him. If that had happened, I’d have no issue giving this match 5 stars.

8. The Undisputed Era vs. Imperium at WWE Worlds Collide 2020 ****3/4: A classic in WWE! Undisputed era are modern day Horsemen taking on the no nonsense old school unit of Imperium in a battle of the superior stable. A hot start with everyone making this look like a legit fight between two heated rival teams only for Alexander Wolfe to catch a shoot kick to the face and get knocked out. Amazingly, this legit injury played perfectly into the match as Undisputed Era with the numbers advantage look to take out Imperium one by one. The majority of the match is spent working over Aicher and Bartel and building to the hot tag for WALTER. The Undisputed Era is desperate to keep the Ring General from getting in the ring even going so far as to put WALTER through a table! But at long last, WALTER gets that hot tag and the crowd explodes! It’s almost a shame that WALTER is such an amazing monster heel because him as a fired up babyface brute is a sight to see! WALTER chops and batters every member of Undisputed Era in sight and takes over the whole pace of the match. It’s incredible to match and almost a shame to end it when WALTER pins Bobby Fish to seal the win. What a match! It’s so sad that Wolfe was taken out and didn’t get to share in the glory of this fantastic match but it in no way took away from this match.

9. G1 Climax 2020 Block A Match: Shingo Takagi vs. Will Ospreay at NJPW G1 Climax 30 Day 5 ****3/4: A rematch of my match of the year in 2019. Ospreay is quick to use his speed to keep the more powerful Shingo off his game. But Shingo is quick to find a target in the well known injured neck of Ospreay and use that to his advantage. The story all match is speed vs. power. While Ospreay is a great striker in his own right, the sheer power of Shingo focuses Ospreay to use high risk offence to try and conquer the Dragon of NJPW. Once again, these two deliver a classic match and one that is a worthy sequel to their incredible bout last year. This year the story is different however, as Ospreay goes high risk once too many times and misses allowing Shingo to hit The Last of the Dragon and get his win back from the BOSJ.

10. G1 Climax 2020 Block A Match: Minoru Suzuki vs. Kota Ibushi at NJPW G1 Climax 30  Day 13 ****3/4: A fantastic match between two very unique wrestlers. Both men worked a very shoot style/MMA style match. Match felt in the same vein of old school Inoki matches or even Bloodsport for the modern fans relying  more on strikes and mat wrestling than Ibushi’s normal high risk style. Nice story moment during the match as Ibushi looks to go more high risk only for Suzuki to challenge him to exchange strikes with him and Ibushi, looking to become “God” in NJPW, accepted the challenge of the veteran. These two had excellent chemistry and match could’ve gone either way before Ibushi rocked Suzuki with a knee to the face and a Kamigoye to end it.
